Overview

The California Epidemiologic Investigation Service (Cal-EIS) is a one- or two-year training program for promising epidemiologists to gain hands-on experience working with an epidemiologist preceptor in either local or state health departments in California.  Established in 1989 in response to the California Conference of Local Health Officers’ need to employ qualified epidemiologists in California’s health departments, Cal-EIS provides training in applied epidemiology for health professionals who have recently graduated from a Master’s degree program.

Qualifications:   (1) United States citizenship or possession of a visa permitting permanent residence in the United States, (2) Possession of an MPH or other advanced degree (i.e., PHD, DVM) in a health-related field and at least two courses in epidemiology, two courses in biostatistics, and one course in R during graduate/professional school. The degree can be in progress at the time of application but must be completed before the beginning of the fellowship. Applicant must reside within California during the Fellowship. Applicant must have demonstrated analytical skills. The primary selection criteria are demonstrated interest in and ability to practice epidemiology in a California public health agency, and commitment to a career in epidemiology in California.
