The Department of Health (DOH) works with others to protect and improve the health of all people in Washington State. The Office of Radiation Protection (ORP) supports this mission by working to ensure the public is protected from harmful effects and unnecessary exposure to ionizing radiation. This position supports this mission by supervising and directing the Waste Management Section technical and support staff to assure that radiation exposures from operation of the low-level radioactive waste disposal site, uranium mills and tailings, radiaoctve waste processors, and other mineral processors are as low as reasonably achievable. This position also assures that the licensing, inspection, and investigation functions contribute to the DOH mission to protect and improve the health of all people in Washington State. This position reports to the Associate Director and supervises a team of eight (8) staff members.
Key Responsibilities:
Supervise the Waste Management Section:Lead and oversee staff to ensure compliance with state regulations regarding uranium mill facilities, radioactive waste processors, disposal site operators, and mineral sites.
Minimize radiation exposure through effective licensing and enforcement actions.
Provide supervisory reviews of technical memos, letters, inspection reports, surveillances, and licensing actions for accuracy and completeness after staff review.
Ensure completion of technical memos for all licensing actions and regulatory decisions.
Coordinate with program maangers to ensure all required inspections are conducted.
Maintain compliance with NRC requirements for Low-Level Radioactive Waste (LLRW) and uranium recovery programs.
Monitor NRC website for rulemaking updates and comment on proposed rules.
Address compatibility issues with NRC regulations and inititate state rule changes.
Participate in required training and drills related to radiological and other emergencies.
Staff Mentorship and Team Collaboration:Provide guidance and mentorship to staff on work expections, safe practices, radiation safety principles, and judgment.
Foster teamwork, accountability, and collaboration amoung staff and section leads.
