Overview
The Data Analyst Contractor will support epidemiology and surveillance work in the Office of the State Epidemiologist. The contractor will be deployed to projects within the Bureau of Infectious Disease and Laboratory Sciences, at the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH). These projects may include working on COVID response activity as well as working with the Division of Global Populations and Infectious Disease Prevention, Tuberculosis (TB) team. Duties will include data collection, data entry, cleaning, and limited data analysis. This role is embedded in a dynamic program and requires the incumbent to adapt and respond to changes as priorities evolve.
The DPH Bureau of Infectious Disease and Laboratory Sciences consists of programs that cross laboratory sciences and infectious disease response. The Bureau’s mission is to optimize testing, analytical, and direct service capacities, using data-, science-, and equity-driven public health principles, to prevent and respond to infections and other public health threats and to improve health outcomes through innovation and partnership at the individual, family, community, and population levels.

Responsibilities:
- Work with the epidemiologic and surveillance data to ensure accuracy and completeness for analysis and reporting.
- Acquire relevant information to ensure quality patient care and excellent surveillance detail from diverse sources, including medical records and patient interviews, and various electronic sources in a timely and efficient manner.
- Complete data entry of case management and surveillance data.
- Assist in the analysis and summarization of program data for special projects and reports related to bureau and division priorities.
- Ensure data quality by using statistical software when required.
- Verify data in the Massachusetts Virtual Epidemiologic Network (MAVEN) according to protocols, such the Report of a Verified Case of Tuberculosis (RVCT) guidance.
- Maintain an accurate, up-to-date record of all assigned cases using MAVEN and obtaining missing case information in a timely fashion.
- Provide technical support for epidemiological investigations.
- Monitor, triage, and disperse electronic faxes/emails in a timely manner during shifts.
- Demonstrate teamwork as a member of the larger case management team, via email, phone calls, in-person meetings, or Microsoft Teams.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in epidemiology, public health, biostatistics, or a related field.
- Experience working with large datasets and conducting data cleaning and validation.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of epidemiology.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Excel
- Ability to read and interpret such documents as lab test results, medical records documentation and other technical documentation, etc.
- Ability to gather information by examining records and documents and through questioning individuals.
- Attention to detail in data entry
- Ability to recognize, evaluate and respond to emergency situations; ability to adjust to changing situations to meet emergency or changing program or production requirements.
- Knowledge of the methods of statistical report writing.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Knowledge of infectious disease surveillance systems and public health data sources.
- Working knowledge of SAS or other statistical analysis programs.
- Knowledge of the research methods and techniques followed in epidemiology.
- Ability to analyze and determine the applicability of epidemiological data, to draw conclusions and make appropriate recommendations.
- Ability to give oral and written instructions in a precise and understandable manner.
- Ability to deal tactfully with others; ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others.
- Ability to exercise sound judgment.
- Knowledge of advanced statistical analysis.
- Knowledge of principles of biology and pathogenesis of diseases.
- Knowledge of general laboratory testing techniques and methods
