Responsibilities

The Senior Laboratory Technician will work on Wadsworth Center’s Food Emergency Response Network (FERN) Cooperative Agreement Program (CAP) and participate in Monthly New York State Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) Food Surveillance.  The incumbent will assist in the trace analysis, using established protocols, of toxic chemicals in foods using Gas Chromatograph – Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS), and Liquid Chromatography – Tandem Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). Duties include assisting in the extraction and purification of food samples and calibration standards, daily instrumental operation and routine maintenance, and data generation. Responsibilities will also include disseminating reports, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and quality assurance manuals as directed.

This position will be part of a dynamic research and development team serving the Wadsworth Center’s mission in the New York State Department of Health’s efforts to protect and promote the health of New York’s citizens. Come be a part of Science in the Pursuit of Health.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate field; OR an Associate’s degree in an appropriate field and two years of experience in a laboratory or clinical setting; OR four years of such experience.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, or related science field. Hands-on experience of small molecules using solid phase extraction (SPE), gas chromatography coupled mass spectrometry (GC/MS) or liquid chromatography (LC) in addition to tandem mass spectrometer (MS/MS) is desired. Knowledge of QuEChERS (Quick, Easy, Cheap, Effective, Rugged, and Safe) or dispersive solid phase extraction procedure.

 

Conditions of Employment

Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.

Valid and unrestricted authorization to work in the U.S. is required. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.

Travel, up to 10% of the time, will be required.

This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting will not be available.
