Responsibilities
The Research Scientist III will serve as a member of the Regional Epidemiology team, participating in outbreak investigations; ensuring surveillance and disease reporting activities are consistent and comply with State rules, protocols, and regulations. Specific duties include: monitoring and overseeing both community and health care associated disease reports, ensure proper investigation measures and follow up of communicable disease clusters and outbreaks, and participate in regional emergency preparedness activities as needed. This incumbent will develop investigative outbreak questionnaires; disseminate intervention policies and recommendations; and provide technical guidance and expertise (both in person and by telephone) regarding urgent/emerging infections and diseases of public health significance such as vaccine preventable diseases, novel influenza viruses (e.g. H1N1), foodborne diseases, hepatitis virus, and emerging threats such as Ebola and Zika viruses. In addition, this position will participate in the development and delivery of infection control education programs for a broad range of healthcare professionals including local health departments (LHDs), school nurses, physicians, health care infection control preventionists, the general public and other state agency representatives. This position will also contribute to the organization, development, analysis of communicable disease investigations for departmental epidemiological reports; presentation at conferences and/or publication in peer reviewed journals.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in epidemiology, public health, health services, nursing, or infection control or a related field and four years of research experience; or a Master’s degree in a related field and three years of research experience; OR a Doctorate in a related field and one year of research experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Master’s degree in Public Health or Nursing. Epidemiology experience at the county, state or healthcare institution level. Experience managing multiple tasks, conducting communicable disease case/outbreak and infection control investigations. Experience working with large data sets, e.g. Excel, SAS, etc. Demonstrated excellent organizational and communication skills, including public speaking and preparation of written materials such as reports or published papers. Experience working independently as well a part of a team.
Conditions of Employment
Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.
This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting will be available.
Travel, up to 25% of the time, will be required.
