CDC Office and Location: A fellowship opportunity is available with the Viral Vaccine Preventable Diseases Branch (VVPDB), within the Division of Viral Diseases (DVD), in the National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases (NCIRD) at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta, Georgia. This opportunity can be part-time or full-time and is eligible to be 100% virtual within 50 miles of the appointment location.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is one of the major operation components of the Department of Health and Human Services. Whether diseases start at home or abroad, are chronic or acute, curable or preventable, human error or deliberate attack, CDC fights disease and supports communities and citizens to do the same.
The mission of the Division of Viral Diseases (DVD) is to prevent disease, disability, and death from viral diseases through immunization and other prevention measures. Within DVD’s VVPBD is the HPV Team which monitors the impact of the HPV vaccination program on a variety of outcomes, including work with Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) on HPV vaccine policy.
Research Project: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the most common sexually transmitted infection and can cause cancer. HPV vaccination protects against the HPV types that are most likely to cause cancer. The HPV team is responsible for working on national HPV vaccine policy and for monitoring the real-world population impact of HPV vaccination to inform policy recommendations. Currently, the team is supporting an HPV Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) Work Group. As part of the review of evidence needed for consideration of policy options, systematic reviews on policy topics of interest are needed. The HPV team is seeking a qualified and motivated candidate to contribute to the HPV team’s efforts in support of ACIP processes.
The team monitors multiple HPV infection outcomes. Depending on the candidate’s interest and needs of the team, there will also be an opportunity to provide data analytical support to different surveillance projects.
Learning Objectives: Under the guidance of a mentor, the participant will learn:
To become familiar with how to conduct a systematic review
To critically review the literature related to an HPV vaccine policy issue
How HPV monitoring occurs in the United States through the various surveillance activities on the team and support surveillance as needed/interested

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: March 10, 2025. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for six months, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full time or part time.
Participant Stipend: Stipend rates may vary based on numerous factors, including opportunity, location, education, and experience. If you are interviewed, you can inquire about the exact stipend rate at that time and if selected, your appointment offer will include the monthly stipend rate.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens, Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR), and foreign nationals. ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.
The successful applicant(s) will be required to comply with Environmental, Safety and Health (ES&H) requirements of the hosting facility, including but not limited to, COVID-19 requirements (e.g. facial covering, physical distancing, testing, vaccination).

Qualifications
The qualified candidate should be currently pursuing or have received a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree in the one of the relevant fields. Degree must have been received within the past five years, or be currently pursuing.
Preferred skills:
Experience in critically reviewing scientific manuscripts (e.g., journal club presentations)
Interest in learning about Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices and vaccine policy processes
Experience with coding (SAS is preferred, but can be taught onsite) if applicant is interested in data analytical project
