The CDPH Environmental Health Laboratory Branch (EHLB) is responsible for laboratory services in support of public health programs, applied research, human studies of chemical exposures, and analyses of environmental and clinical samples for toxic substances. EHLB provides technical assistance, develops new methods to better measure exposures, and serves as a reference laboratory. The EHLB Biochemistry Section conducts environmental testing for lead-poisoned children; biomonitoring of heavy metals, organic pollutants, and chemical metabolites; emerging contaminants identification; and intervention studies. The EHLB Air Quality Section provides measurements and technical guidance on indoor air pollutants, including control measures and infectious aerosols; emerging product emissions; community air monitoring; and emergency chemical exposures including wildfire smoke.
This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by strengthening the state environmental public health and laboratory testing program.
The candidate works under the general supervision of the Research Scientist Supervisor I (RSSI) Chief of the Laboratory Unit of the Air Quality Section, the Research Scientist II (RS II) plans, organizes, and carries out collaborative scientific research studies on environmental health problems related to air quality and other harmful chemical exposures related to wildfires, as mandated under Health and Safety Code §425, §105400 et seq., and others, including field sampling and lab analysis of air samples. The RS II also serves as a technical scientific consultant to other scientists and officials within California Department of Public Health (CDPH) and other state, federal, and local agencies.

Measure and analyze airborne chemicals.
Evaluate exposure mitigation solutions for those chemicals based on their efficiency and feasibility for different communities.
Discuss these findings with laboratory scientists as well as engineers, public health and community partners.
