CTPP is recruiting diverse candidates for our Epidemiologist (Research Scientist III) position. This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by working toward achieving a tobacco-free California and to reduce tobacco-related illness and premature deaths by implementing programs to reduce tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke.

Under administrative direction of the Research Scientist Supervisor I (RSS I) Chief, Surveillance Unit, the Research Scientist III (RS III) (Epidemiology/Biostatistics) independently plans, organizes, and directs scientific research and epidemiologic studies of a highly developed scientific scope and complexity to intervene or prevent tobacco-related diseases, to reduce tobacco use among youth and adults, and to decrease tobacco related disparities. The RS III will have the responsibility to make independent, complex decisions related to the design, implementation, analyses, and conclusions drawn from those scientific studies. This position will be a primary liaison and represent CTPP with state and national public health agencies, universities, and research personnel regarding scientific studies; coordinate scientific studies with other federal and academic institutions; and provide scientific advice and consultation to other research scientists within CTPP, and other state and federal agencies. The position will be responsible for developing major scientific studies that determine the effectiveness and impact of CTPP’s programs on ending the tobacco epidemic in California. This position requires the incumbent possess a high degree of independent research design and data analysis skills and be able to apply novel research methodology and techniques. The incumbent also acts as a resource to management and staff for complex advanced research and statistical methods.

Ability to:

Prioritize work, follow direction
Communicate effectively, verbally and in writing
Work independently and in team settings
Knowledge of:

Epidemiologic study design and statistical analysis
MS and statistical software such as: SAS, Stata, SPSS, R, etc.
Project management skills
Experience in:

Analyzing complex survey data using SAS, Stata, SPSS, or R, etc.
Planning and conducting epidemiologic/biostatistics projects
Drawing conclusions from epidemiological/biostatistics investigations
Providing specialized research/evaluation training and technical assistance to diverse audiences
Leading a team or workgroup
