This position is responsible for overseeing the surveillance, prevention, and control of communicable diseases, environmental health threats, chronic health conditions and other public health threats across the state. The role entails leading data collection and analysis from various health data sources, coordinating epidemiological investigations, and advising on public health policies and interventions across California Department of Public Health (CDPH) programs. This includes the responsibility for collecting and analyzing epidemiological data across all disease types to understand the scope and impact of public health issues. By gathering precise and comprehensive data, the State Epidemiologist identifies disease trends, evaluates risk factors, guides public health interventions, and ultimately reduces the burden of diseases on populations. Additionally, the role involves using epidemiological data to inform policies, health practices, and targeted interventions aimed at protecting and improving public health. The State Epidemiologist works collaboratively with various stakeholders to ensure data-driven decisions that enhance the overall well-being of communities.

Desirable Qualifications
In addition to evaluating each candidate’s relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Physician, Veterinarian, or PhD in related field preferred
Background and Experience in Public Health Applied Epidemiology and/or Data Utilization
Experience overseeing large surveillance systems
Experience overseeing public health investigations
Ability to manage teams from across reporting structures
Experience reporting to and/or testifying before local, state, or federal legislature or other elected officials
Experience as a spokesperson in the media
Excellent leadership skills, including values such as equity, continuous improvement, and trauma responsiveness.
