This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by promoting equitable social, economic, and environmental conditions to achieve optimal health, mental health, and well-being for all.
The incumbent works under the direction of the Health Program Manager II in the Tribal Affairs Section of the Office of Health Equity (OHE). The Health Program Specialist II (HPS II) serves as the Department’s Tribal Relations Coordinator and works in partnership with Tribes and American Indian/Alaskan Native Communities (AI/AN) on tribal programs, policies, and practices. In addition to working with Tribal and AI/AN members and organizations, the incumbent will work with programs across CDPH as well as with Tribal Liaisons from other State of California Agencies and Departments interpretation of research and data; training, and contract and budget management. This position requires the ability to work independently, communicate effectively and with cultural humility. Daily proficient utilization of the Microsoft Office Suite and regular statewide travel are required.
People with lived expertise of health inequities impacting Tribal communities are particularly encouraged to apply.
This is a hybrid in-office/telework position. Up to 10% travel may be required for the position, including occasional travel to Sacramento or the San Francisco Bay Area. Please be aware that the application and hiring process may take approximately six months.

In addition to evaluating each candidate’s relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:
Experience collaborating with Tribal governments and organizations serving Tribal communities, particularly within California.
Proven experience working with state and local agencies across multiple sectors, with a strong emphasis on local health jurisdictions
Experience promoting and advancing health equity in Tribal communities through policy development and implementation
Able to apply health regulations, policies and procedures with Tribal Health and Tribal Affairs programs
Able to monitor and evaluate health programs and projects related to Tribal communities
Skilled in authentic engagement with diverse communities, including Tribal communities
Strong team collaborator with the ability to work independently on complex projects
Effective relationship builder with strong interpersonal skills
Highly organized with the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and related office systems
Professional, courteous, and positive in all work interactions
