Overview
Working alongside the Associate Director of Education Content Writing, the Public Education Specialist will support the American Kidney Fund’s (AKF) mission to educate those affected by kidney disease by creating, translating, and reviewing high-quality website content for patient and caregiver audiences. This role involves both updating the website using a content management system and conducting environmental scans and literature reviews to ensure content reflects current health guidelines, emerging trends, and evolving patient needs. The Specialist plays a key role in ensuring that content is clear, accurate, culturally appropriate, and accessible in both English and Spanish. The Specialist will be responsible for creating new Spanish content as well as reviewing and editing existing Spanish content. The Public Education Specialist will collaborate across departments to translate complex health topics into plain language.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Drafts clear, accurate, and engaging web content for diverse audiences, ensuring alignment with plain language and health literacy best practices.
- Conducts environmental scans and literature reviews of clinical guidelines and health communication best practices to identify content needs for the American Kidney Fund (AKF) website.
- Translates educational web content into Spanish and reviews existing AKF Spanish content for accuracy and cultural relevance along with supporting cultural adaptation of content considering the language, culture, and context of our audiences.
- Collaborates across departments, including Communications, Development, Government Affairs, and Business Operations, to assure educational materials developed meet the needs of the entire organization and ensures the public education team maintains the same positive collaboration.
- Supports the development of new educational pages by drafting content outlines and webpages.
- Conducts regular audit of and updates existing AKF website content.
- Collaborates with the Public Education team and Office of Communications and Marketing to align messaging and maintain consistent tone and voice across platforms.
- Collaborates with Office of Communication and Marketing to review and edit web content to ensure content is error free, includes updates, functional links, and keywords optimized for SEO.
- Works alongside education team to develop, document, and implement process for conducting audit of education materials and content on AKF website.
- Assists in the coordination of AKF’s content review processes for website enhancement.
- Makes web edits using content management system.
- Keeps up to date on the latest trends in health communication to incorporate into AKF web content.
- Represents AKF at professional conferences via exhibit staffing and/or research poster presentation as assigned. Some travel required up to 10%.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in Health Education, Community Health, Public Health, Behavioral Sciences, Communications, Journalism, English, or a related field.
- 2-3 years of related work experience.
- Excellent verbal and written communications skills required in English and Spanish.
- Superior writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
- Excellent project management and organizational skills.
- Culturally competent with the ability to tailor content for diverse audiences.
- Experience applying principles of health literacy, plain language standards, best practices of health communication, both verbal and written required.
- Experience with and understanding of needs of those with chronic disease or renal health a plus.
- Demonstrated ability to be highly flexible, and work independently and/or in a team environment.
- Certification in CPH, CHES or MCHES a plus.
