Overview

Arlington County’s Department of Human Services (DHS) is seeking a Program Epidemiologist to join the Public Health Division’s (PHD) Communicable Disease (CD) Program to prevent and control the spread of communicable disease in the community. This position is one of two Program Epidemiologists of the Disease Surveillance and Investigation (DSI) program area who share oversight of the day-to-day operations of the DSI program.

Responsibilities
Specific duties include:

Receiving reports of communicable diseases, prioritizing investigations of outbreaks and rapidly reportable diseases, and assigning to self and PHNs for investigation;
Investigating and managing reportable disease cases and outbreaks of any disease, with a wide spectrum of complexity (including site visits to outbreak locations);
Conducting outreach in the community, including outreach to vulnerable or hard-to-reach populations regarding outbreaks and health education;
Providing consultation to PHNs who investigate communicable diseases, as well as to community providers as needed;
Monitoring established disease surveillance systems to detect outbreaks and other significant public health events.
Utilizing expertise in data collection, analysis and report writing
Providing training as subject matter experts to program staff and community partners related to epidemiology, disease control measures and data collection and analysis; and
Participating in emergency planning and response and utilizing the Incident Command System when indicated for outbreak investigation.
The ideal candidate will possess strong written and oral communication skills and excellent customer service skills.
