Position Purpose ASPPH is seeking a WordPress web developer to join our dedicated in-house web development team to deliver innovative software and services for our organization, our members, and the academic public health field worldwide.

Primary Responsibilities

This WordPress web developer position will be responsible for both back- and front-end development, including creating and/or implementing WordPress themes and plug-ins. This position requires a combination of programming skills, primarily PHP, HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and Bootstrap. In addition, this role supports the various aspects of the website environment, including UX/UI design, availability, reliability, performance, monitoring, and security of the website. Primary functions include website development following the software development lifecycle applying agile and SCRUM methodologies, maintenance, assessment, and providing feedback for improvements.

• Work collaboratively with the in-house web development, DevOps, marketing, and communication teams to deliver cutting-edge WordPress websites, following a human-centered software development lifecycle from ideation to implementation.

• Analyze requirements, assist with design, and other planning activities related to building websites and components

• Establish and guide the websites’ architecture.

• With a service-oriented mentality, high ownership of problems and requests assigned, focus on managing and resolving issues in alignment with the SLAs, establishing and maintaining communication with technology customers to keep them updated with request status.

• Ensure high-performance, availability and security, and manage all technical aspects of the content management system (CMS).

• Adherence to web development standards, governance processes, and best practices.

• Assist with QA testing and bug tracking.

• Evolution of skill sets and adaptation to innovative technologies.

Minimum Qualifications

• Demonstrable experience in building user interfaces for websites and web applications using front-end technologies, including HTML, CSS, JavaScript, and jQuery.
• Experience in aiding in the design and building responsive websites with user-centric design approach.

• Ability to understand CSS changes and ramifications to ensure consistant styling across platforms and browsers.

• Ability to convert comprehensive UX wireframes and UI design layouts into working HTML pages.

• Knowledge of how to interact with RESTful APIs and formats (JSON XML).

• Experience with WordPress and/or other content management systems in addition to website security best practices.

• Understanding of WordPress architecture, developing custom themes and custom content types, creating custom plugins, in local, staging and production environments.

• Experience with implementing off-the-shelf plugins and upgrades.

• Experience managing traditional WordPress web hosting infrastructure and/or working with web hosting services.

• Understanding of PHP, MySQL, and LAMP stack skills.

• Experience with Ruby on Rails, React, and/or Salesforce is a plus.

• Experience with AWS infrastructure is a plus.

• Previous workplace experience working collaboratively with an agile team including other developers, designers, and marketers is a plus.

Additional Information

• Work locale: ASPPH has its headquarters office located in Washington, D.C. The ideal candidate will be located within a reasonable commute of downtown Washington, D.C. in order to work in-person once per week or in one of the following states if permanently remote: CO, FL, GA, MA, MD, NC, TX, VA, and WV.

• Reports to: Senior Director of Innovation and Strategic Planning.

• Manages/supervisors: No supervisory responsibilities.

• Authority to work in the U.S.: The individual must be legally eligible to work in the U.S.

• Travel requirements: Some travel may be necessary for ASPPH Annual Meeting and/or professional development opportunities.

• Compensation: The position’s compensation level is based on industry salary surveys and the individual’s experience. ASPPH also takes into consideration the internal pay equity of our existing team members. The salary range for this position is 75,000-85,000. We typically do not hire at the maximum level to allow for salary growth. ASPPH offers a generous benefits package, detailed below.
