Overview

The Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) is seeking a qualified candidate to serve as the Perinatal Infections Data Analyst. MDPH is a participant in the Surveillance for Emerging Threats to Pregnant People and their Infants Network (SET-NET), a program that examines the health effects of infectious diseases on both the pregnant person and their infant. SET-NET entails longitudinal surveillance of exposed pregnancies and infants in order to identify potential adverse health outcomes. MDPH’s current focus is on perinatal hepatitis C infection.

The primary work location is the Massachusetts State Public Health Laboratory located at 305 South Street, Boston, MA 02130.

Responsibilities and duties

The data analyst will be involved in all aspects of the perinatal infections surveillance project including creation of electronic case report forms, data collection, data management and quality assurance, submission and analysis of data, and participation in all relevant meetings. The data analyst will serve in a coordinating role between: the Division of Epidemiology and the Division of Surveillance, Analytics, and Informatics in MDPH’s Bureau of Infectious Disease and Laboratory Sciences; the Division for Surveillance, Research, and Promotion of Perinatal Health in MDPH’s Bureau of Family Health and Nutrition; and the Division of Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

As a member of the Division of Epidemiology’s Viral Hepatitis Team, reporting to the Hepatitis C Surveillance Coordinator, the data analyst will further be responsible for developing a perinatal hepatitis C case investigation and follow-up process, informed by best surveillance practices. The data analyst will conduct investigations of suspected acute viral hepatitis cases in conjunction with local health jurisdictions in Massachusetts. The data analyst will be involved in the development of informational materials for providers and the public related to perinatal transmission of viral hepatitis. The data analyst will assist in reporting on grant-related metrics and deliverables.

Required and preferred qualifications

Candidates must have strong analytical skills, including significant experience with SAS statistical computing software, as they will be responsible for designing analysis plans, collecting and managing epidemiological data, conducting analysis, and interpreting findings. The candidate must be detail-oriented and possess good written and oral communication skills. Experience gathering clinical information by examining records and documents, and through interviewing individuals, is beneficial.
