Overview
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is seeking a Media Unit Supervisor to lead paid media activities for the California Tobacco Prevention Program (CTPP). The program works toward a tobacco-free California and aims to reduce tobacco-related illness and premature deaths by reducing tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke. CDPH values equity, diversity, inclusion, and partnership in advancing the health and well-being of California’s communities.
Reporting to the Supervisor II of the Media and Communications Section, the Supervisor I initiates, plans, coordinates, manages, and evaluates major components of CTPP’s communications campaign. The position leads and supports a multidisciplinary team that includes two Marketing Specialists, one Health Program Specialist I, and one UCD Media Communications Specialist 3. Key responsibilities include coordinating the work of the media contractor and subcontractors; collaborating with CTPP staff and partners on statewide tobacco-control campaigns; monitoring contractor performance; and guiding advertising strategy and development across paid media, digital, social, and public relations efforts. The supervisor prepares communications materials for CDPH and Health and Human Services Agency executive staff and the general public, and assists with procurement development and contract award processes. The role requires effective leadership, sound coordination, and strong written and verbal communication in working with staff, management, contractors, and external stakeholders.
