Job Description and Duties
Incumbents in one of these classifications, where a Master’s Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 2% of their monthly base pay. Those where a Doctoral Degree is a required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 3% of their monthly base pay. Individuals with both a Master’s and Doctoral Degree will be given the best benefit in relation to salary shall only be eligible for only one amount.

The Research Scientist (RS) III (Epidemiology/Biostatistics) provides epidemiologic expertise related to lead and other workplace hazards and health effects pertinent to California’s workers. Operates and maintains the Adult Blood Lead Registry. Along with the Chief of the Occupational Lead Poisoning Prevention Program (OLPPP), prioritizes, plans, and acts as a lead in overseeing the Registry. Designs and conducts research studies on human populations, public health investigations, and statistical evaluations of a highly developed scientific scope and complexity related to occupational lead poisoning and other recognized and emerging occupational health issues in California. The RS III acts as subject matter expert and technical consultant to the Department programs and members of the public. May require periodic overnight travel to scientific meetings or investigation sites within California, up to 5%.

The incumbent works under the general direction of the Research Scientist Supervisor I (RSS I), Chief, OLPPP, Occupational Health Branch (OHB).

A Research Scientist (RS) III or RS II (Epidemiology/Biostatistics) will be considered for this position. The position responsibilities for an RS II will be adjusted as appropriate for that level.

The attached duty statement indicates whether this position is eligible for telework. All employees who telework are required to be California residents in accordance with Government Code 14200, and may be required to report to a CDPH office, when needed. Candidates who reside outside of the state of California may be interviewed; however, the selected candidate must have a primary residency in the state of California prior to appointment (and continue to maintain California residency) as a condition of employment. Failure to meet this requirement may result in the job offer being rescinded.
