The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) is currently hiring for a Deputy Director of our Center for Healthy Communities!

 

About the Center for Healthy Communities:

 

The Center for Healthy Communities is one of eight Centers within CDPH, leading the way toward healthy communities and safe environments for all of those residing in California. There are around 600 authorized positions with a budget of approximately $600 million. With nine Branches and four Offices, the Center represents a diverse set of public health programs that address the challenging and evolving fields of chronic disease prevention; behavioral, environmental, occupational, and oral health; nutrition security; injury, suicide, substance use, tobacco, and gambling disorder prevention; and promoting shared policies, systems, and environmental changes that enable individuals and communities to thrive.

About the Role:

 

The Deputy Director of the Center for Healthy Communities oversees public health policy development, aligning the Center’s programs with the Department’s vision. The Deputy Director will serve as a liaison and offer policy recommendations to various state and federal entities, community organizations, and business and healthcare communities in California.

 

The Deputy Director ensures the activities and policies of the Center for Healthy Communities’ programs promote equity and diversity and are consistent with the Department’s strategic vision and goals for public health in California. The Deputy Director operates under the CDPH Assistant Health Officer within the Population Health organizational pillar.

 

 

Responsibilities:

 

·       Provides leadership and strategic direction to the 40 programs in the Center and develops an overarching identity and direction for the Center, bringing together its disparate programs into a cohesive whole with a shared vision and direction that are in alignment with the Department.

·       Develops, implements, and evaluates statewide public and environmental health policies, recommendations, and programs to improve the health status of California’s population.

·       Addresses health inequities related to chronic disease; physical, behavioral, environmental, occupational, and oral health; nutrition security; and injury, suicide,

substance use, tobacco, and gambling disorder prevention.

·       Addresses associated risk factors by integrating disease and injury prevention practices; promoting scientific excellence, professional infrastructure, and leadership; promoting policies, systems, and environmental changes that foster health.

·       Provide overall management of the Center for Healthy Communities to ensure program compliance with departmental policies.

·       Fosters excellence and inclusion in public health practices, data collection and analysis, and public health education.

·       Advances and mobilizes an equity-focused, trauma-responsive professional infrastructure for achievement, growth, and development of all CHC employees.

·       Fosters a culture of learning and continuous improvement that encourages and supports inclusive, informed discussions and productive collaboration with partners including subject matter experts, local health jurisdictions, community organizations, the public, and others.

·       Provides relevant, appropriate, and responsive public health leadership to California’s 61 local health jurisdictions.

·       Provides professional review of CHC program studies, journal manuscripts, educational materials, reports to the Legislature, and various technical reports to ensure compliance with CDPH policies, existing law, public health requirements, and overall quality control requirements.

·       Advises the CDPH Director, California Health and Human Services Secretary, and the Governor’s Office on policy and legislative matters pertaining to chronic disease prevention; physical, behavioral, environmental, occupational, and oral health; nutrition security; injury, suicide, substance use, tobacco, and gambling disorder prevention; and promoting shared policies, systems, and environmental changes that enable individuals and communities to thrive.

·       Represents CDPH at local, state, national and international forums on topics related to chronic disease prevention; behavioral, environmental, occupational, and oral health; nutrition security; injury, suicide, substance use and gambling disorder, tobacco prevention; promoting shared policies, systems, and environmental changes that enable individuals and communities to thrive; and other related public health issues.

 

Desirable Qualifications:

 

·       Experience leading and aligning diverse programs and promoting a positive team environment while encouraging collaboration.

·       Experience driving health equity policy and programming.

·       Experience presenting information to a wide range of audiences, including the media; legislature; local, state and/or federal agencies; universities; the public; and other community groups.

·       Knowledge of government administrative and operational functions including, but not limited to, hiring, procurement, and budgetary processes.

·       Knowledge of transformational and trauma-responsive leadership.

·       Ability to approach complex health problems with creativity, inclusiveness, and critical analysis and make clear and concise data and community-driven recommendations.

·       Ability to collaborate and maintain effective relationships with other governmental institutions, local health jurisdictions, community-based organizations, and other strategic partners to enhance programs and services as well as advance policies, systems, and environmental changes that promote health equity.

·       Ability to encourage and support innovation and continuous improvement.

·       Ability to adapt to changing priorities and direction, while continuously iterating and pivoting as needed given evolving information and feedback.
