Job Description and Duties

Applicants applying for this job control, are applying for the exam and job vacancy simultaneously.This position supports CDPH’s mission and strategic plan by managing and directing operations, policy, and program development in conjunction with the CEH DD on a wide range of public and environmental health issues.

The Assistant Deputy Director (ADD) assists in leading CEH, including the planning, implementation, coordination, evaluation, and management of CDPH’s environmental health programs and policies. The ADD is responsible for the routine management and operations of CEH’s two divisions, the Division of Food and Drug Safety and the Division of Radiation Safety and Environmental Management, and the Center Office, which includes the Environmental Health Support Section. The Environmental Health Support Section offers programs for emergency preparedness, supports the State Environmental Health Director functions, and hosts the One Health program which coordinates statewide efforts to address problems that impact environmental, human, and animal health.

The ADD also serves as the backup to the DD on all issues and may work directly with the CDPH Director’s Office, California Health and Human Services Agency, Governor’s Office, Department of Finance, legislative representatives, other state, local, and federal representatives, members of the public, and the media. The ADD works in close partnership with the DD and provides periodic coverage for the DD. The ADD is a member of CDPH Executive Staff and is subject to the Department’s Conflict of Interest Code and filing a Statement of Economic Interests (Form 700).

The incumbent works under the general direction of the DD, Center for Environmental Health, and coordinates with the Assistant Public Health Officer for Population Health in the CDPH Director’s Office.
