Job Description and Duties
Incumbents in one of these classifications, where a Master’s Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 2% of their monthly base pay. Those where a Doctoral Degree is a required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 3% of their monthly base pay. Individuals with both a Master’s and Doctoral Degree will be given the best benefit in relation to salary shall only be eligible for only one amount.

The incumbent works under the general direction of the Research Scientist Supervisor I, Chief of the Unintentional Injury Prevention Data Unit. The Research Scientist (RS) III is responsible for the independent design, development and implementation of epidemiological surveillance, research, evaluation, and dissemination to support unintentional injury prevention. Specifically, the RS III will provide non-supervisorial leadership for the Childhood Drowning Data Collection Pilot Program, which is being implemented per Senate Bill 855. The RS III will design and implement all aspects of this Data Collection Pilot Program; this will involve collaborating with participating counties to collect detailed data on childhood drownings and developing recommendations for an ongoing statewide system for collecting relevant child drowning data. Additionally, The RS III will analyze data and disseminate results through presentations and reports, including reports to the state legislature and a California Water Safety Action Plan for Children. The RS III is also required to work effectively with partners from other agencies, multi-disciplinary professionals, lay organizations, individuals, and other water safety stakeholders. The RS III will provide authoritative scientific guidance or consultation to other scientists and staff contributing to research, surveillance, and prevention of injuries.  Minimal travel (5%) may be required within state to contribute to pilot project goals, as necessary, and may include overnight stays.

The attached duty statement indicates whether this position is eligible for telework. All employees who telework are required to be California residents in accordance with Government Code 14200, and may be required to report to a CDPH office, when needed. Candidates who reside outside of the state of California may be interviewed; however, the selected candidate must have a primary residency in the state of California prior to appointment (and continue to maintain California residency) as a condition of employment. Failure to meet this requirement may result in the job offer being rescinded.
