Position:
Research Health Science Specialist (Senior Qualitative Analyst); GS-12; Full-time, QUERI Center for Evaluation and Implementation Resources (CEIR), VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, Ann Arbor, MI.
Description:
The Center for Evaluation and Implementation Resources (CEIR) is seeking a full-time Senior Qualitative Analyst. The Senior Qualitative Analyst will be a key member of CEIR’s evaluation team. CEIR is a VA Quality Enhancement Research Initiative (QUERI) resource center dedicated to helping VA employees bridge the gap between discovery and field application of clinical and operational best practices to improve the health and well-being of Veterans, their families, and their caregivers. CEIR focuses on promoting best practices in program evaluation and implementation science, with the view that these skill areas are relevant to the work of all VA employees, and by extension, Veteran care. CEIR also provides support to VA operational offices by addressing issues of high national priority through partnered evaluations. This is a non-supervisory staff position primarily responsible for leading qualitative data collection and analysis to support CEIR in assessing the impact, effectiveness, and efficiency of VA programs across the nation. The Senior Qualitative Analyst will report to CEIR’s Evaluation Core Lead.
Key Duties:
· In collaboration with the lead evaluator(s), determine and apply appropriate qualitative data collection and analysis techniques to answer evaluation questions
· Develop qualitative data collection tools (e.g. interview guides, observation templates)
· Participate in qualitative data collection (e.g., lead interviews, focus groups, take notes) as relevant to study protocols
· Lead analysis of qualitative data using a range of analytical methods relevant to specific studies (e.g. content analysis, thematic analysis, matrix analysis), including maintaining an accurate codebook, inputting data into qualitative analysis software, coding, running analysis reports, and participating in analytic discussions
· Review the work of other qualitative analysts and evaluation assistants
· Identify potential problems with data quality and work with the evaluation lead(s) to address them
· Provide methodological guidance related to qualitative data collection and new analysis techniques
· Develop and maintain clear and organized documentation within program files
· Use qualitative analysis software to manage qualitative data for specific analytic purposes (e.g., analysis of open-ended survey data)
· Contribute qualitative expertise to prepare a variety of evaluation products (e.g., evaluation proposals, technical reports, journal manuscripts, conference abstracts, presentations, one-pagers, infographics)
· Participate in VA qualitative workgroup meetings with other analysts
· Participate in meetings with VA operational partners to gather input on data collection and discuss findings
· Perform other work duties as assigned
Required Qualifications:
· Applicant must be a U.S. citizen
· Ability to communicate (speak, read, and write) in English
· Master’s degree in a health-related field (e.g., medical anthropology, public health, health services research, psychology)
· Graduate coursework or equivalent training in qualitative methods
· Experience leading qualitative data collection, analysis, and synthesis of findings
· Proficient in using qualitative data software (MAXQDA or NVivo preferred)
· Excellent written and oral communication skills, with ability to write and present qualitative findings to both academic and non-technical audiences
· Excellent interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence
· Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously
· Ability to work independently and collaboratively with an interdisciplinary team
· Ability to adapt to changing priorities and timelines
· Ability to think creatively to problem-solve unexpected qualitative challenges
· Highly motivated to interact with Veterans, healthcare providers, and operational partners
Preferred Qualifications:
· Prior experience in an evaluation or applied research setting
· Prior experience working on studies using mixed methods
· Familiarity with key facets of program evaluation and health services research
· Prior experience developing codebooks based on conceptual frameworks (e.g., RE-AIM, CFIR)
· Familiarity with rapid qualitative analytic techniques
· Experience interviewing healthcare providers and/or health system executive leadership

Schedule:
· 40 hours/wk (1.0 FTE)
· 8-hour shift Monday to Friday

· Position is full-time in-person/on-site at the University of Michigan’s North Campus Research Complex (NCRC) in Ann Arbor, MI.
