Tenured/Tenure-Track, Assistant or Associate Professor in Global Health
The Robert Stempel College of Public Health & Social Work’s mission is to improve health and the wellbeing of all local, national, and global populations through education, research, and partnerships that are innovative and transformative. The college’s academic disciplines—public health, dietetics and nutrition, social work, and disaster preparedness—are advancing research and practices to realize this mission, bringing students and faculty to the forefront of their fields. According to the Blue Ridge Institute for Medical Research, the college ranks No. 12 in the nation for public health schools at public universities receiving National Institutes of Health (NIH) research funding. In its 2024-2025 Graduate Program Rankings, U.S. News & World Report ranked Stempel College’s School of Public Health at No. 35 among all public universities and No. 59 amongst 213 schools and programs in the U.S. Uniquely located in Miami, Florida, at the gateway to Latin America and the Caribbean, Stempel College faculty are working daily to solve complex health and social welfare problems affecting underserved populations, including environmental health issues, chronic disease health, global health, substance abuse, , and mental health outcomes.
The Department of Global Health has an overarching vision to enable global and national health for all by fostering interdisciplinary science and integrative education (https://stempel.fiu.edu/academics/public-health/disciplines/global-health/index.html). The department is also home to the Global Health Consortium (ghc.fiu.edu, a collaborative platform focused on coordinating regional scientific engagements in the Americas) and works closely with the new FIU Population Health Initiative (PHI, which aims to develop local community-based solutions to reduce health risks in tackling key health challenges faced by populations in South Florida).
The key scientific pillars of the department of global health include a) to investigate the causes of major chronic non-communicable diseases (NCDs), in various population settings, b) to characterize how biological and behavioral factors drive NCD health, and c) to apply implementation research to bridge the global gap between evidence and policy translation to reduce common chronic diseases.
Key qualifications
As a part of key strategic hire, the Department of Global Health seeks to recruit a global health leader to serve as a tenure/tenure-earning faculty member, at associate or assistant professor levels, in Global Health or Global Implementation Science. We welcome applications from candidates with experience in implementation science research, nationally in the US or globally, in the following area: (a) Global NCD health, (b) Chronic diseases, e.g., cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer prevention and control, (c) methodologic areas such as: Implementation research or health policy research. An ideal candidate will have a doctoral degree in a relevant discipline, including but not limited to epidemiology, public health, global health or implementation science. They will have a strong track record of collaboration, an excellent publication record, and a relevant portfolio of grant holding (e.g., from NIH); experience in conducting relevant interdisciplinary research in multiple settings; and a commitment to providing high-quality teaching and maintaining respectful working relationships.
Key responsibilities
The selected candidate will be given the opportunity to participate in ongoing research with multidisciplinary researchers and will be expected to develop and maintain an original, creative, and independent research program with evidence of high quality and productivity. This requires publications in high impact peer-reviewed journals and demonstrating the potential for successful submission and management of investigator-initiated grant proposals. The candidate will be expected to contribute to the educational mission of the College and the Department through teaching and advising Master and Doctoral students.
