Responsibilities
Health Research, Inc. is seeking an Hourly Laboratory Technician to support a research project at the Wadswoth Center’s Laboratory of Molecular Genetics. The project explores how mycobacteria detect contact with an unrelated neighbor and initiate a response to that contact. The experimental system uses conjugation (the transfer of DNA from one cell to another) as a model for interaction. The Hourly Laboratory Technician will support efforts to generate and test mycobacterial mutants using the conjugation process. Mutants will include a deletion of the featured gene, and replacement by altered genes designed to test hypotheses in signal transduction.
Specific duties include assisting with 96-well plate-based RT-qPCR and luminescence assays, assisting to perform end-point PCRs for assays and cloning, assisting to perform DNA ligation and ligation-free plasmid cloning in E. coli, assisting to perform plasmid minipreps, purifying total RNA from monocultures and cocultures of Mycobacterium smegmatis. Responsibilities also include assisting to edit DNA sequence files to accompany the experimentation as well as spreadsheet and graphical presentation software.

Minimum Qualifications
Undergraduate or Graduate Student enrolled in Biology or a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience in culturing and harvesting Mycobacterium smegmatis for conjugation assays, colony morphotype analysis.
Experience culturing E. coli with appropriate sterile and aseptic techniques.
Experience in an experimental molecular laboratory setting.
Experience in an experimental microbiology laboratory setting.
Experience with the polymerase chain reaction.
Conditions of Employment
Hourly, grant funded position expected to last through 8/20/2025. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.
Valid and unrestricted authorization to work in the U.S. is required. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
The selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location specified in the job posting and must also be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts, prior to hire. Telecommuting will not be available.
