Responsibilities
Health Research, Inc. is seeking an Hourly Project Assistant II to work within the Bureau of Communicable Disease Control’s Team Cluster Buster. The Hourly Project Assistant II will assist in conducting surveillance of New York State Vibriosis cases with the opportunity to collaborate with regional epidemiologists, local health departments, other state agencies and the CDC. Vibriosis is an illness caused by the Vibrio bacteria species. Illness often occurs from eating raw or undercooked shellfish or by exposing a wound to seawater.
This position will also assist in conducting interviews of other enteric disease cases (e.g., Salmonella, Campylobacter, Giardia, etc.) with standardized questionnaires to help identify exposures to food, water, and animal sources. These case interviews are important for cluster and outbreak investigations. Case interviews assist the local health departments during the busy summer season when the majority of cases are reported. This position will also assist in conducting focused interviews with cases that are part of statewide or national clusters and share interview data with CDC. This position offers opportunities to sit in on multistate calls regarding disease clusters with the CDC and FDA.
This position is part of the Pathways to Public Health Internship Program. This position will last approximately 10 weeks from 6/2/2025 to 8/8/2025. It is made available through funding from the Center for Disease Control’s Public Health Infrastructure Grant to expand opportunities to strengthen career pathways to public health by bringing together students of all disciplines and academic levels with public health professionals to create a space of exploration, learning, and development.
Minimum Qualifications
Currently or within the past six months enrolled in an institution of higher education pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in public health, epidemiology, data analysis, or a closely related field.
Preferred Qualifications
Experience conducting telephone interviews. Knowledge of communicable diseases. Knowledge of data analysis and data management using SAS or Excel.
Conditions of Employment
Hourly, grant funded position expected to last through 08/8/2025. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.
Valid and unrestricted authorization to work in the U.S. is required. Visa sponsorship is not available for this position.
Travel, up to 10% of the time, will be required.
The selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location specified in the job posting and must also be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts, prior to hire. Telecommuting will be available.
