Responsibilities
Health Research, Inc. is seeking a Research Scientist I. The Research Scientist I (RS) will perform assay development work for infectious disease detection and characterization real-time RT-PCR assays for transfer, validation, and implementation on the Alinity M automated instrument platform. Assays will be for subsequent use on clinical respiratory samples from symptomatic patients, and work will include the establishment of appropriate controls, quality assurance procedures, and instrument maintenance. The RS will also develop staff training programs for subsequent training of Virology staff on the new methods and participate in staff training exercises. They will also collaborate with staff, contributing to the development of pipelines for data transfer, data visualizations, and test reporting.
This position will be part of a dynamic team serving the Wadsworth Center’s mission as part of the New York State Department of Health’s efforts to protect and promote the health of New York’s citizens. Come be a part of Science in the Pursuit of Health®!
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology and two years of research experience; OR a master’s degree in a chemical, biological, clinical or medical laboratory science, or medical technology and one year of research experience. Degrees must be from an accredited institution.

Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a biological/biomedical science. At least three years of experience performing molecular methods, including at least one year handling infectious agents. Experience developing and validating real-time PCR assays. Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office software, including for database management. Experience communicating scientific data to laboratory teammates and leadership.
Conditions of Employment
Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.

Travel, up to 10% of the time, will be required.
The selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location specified in the job posting and must also be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts, prior to hire. Telecommuting may be available on a very limited basis.
Exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position. Therefore, the incumbent in this position may be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment.
This position may require occasional work on weekends, after-hours, and holidays.
