Responsibilities
The Research Scientist II will provide oversight for virology testing for the New York State wastewater testing program and participate in infectious disease digital PCR testing of wastewater sample extracts each week. Duties will include monitoring instrument scheduling and coordination with the wastewater processing laboratory, monitoring of the nucleic acid freezer inventory system, oversight of instrument maintenance, quality assurance, and scheduling of instrument repairs with service engineers, inventory monitoring, writing standard operating procedures, and bench notes. The incumbent will also participate in research and development for improvements and optimization of methods for viral detection, quantitation, and analysis in wastewater, as well as for quality assurance methods and procedures. The incumbent will also coordinate with data analysts regarding pipelines for data transfer and data visualizations.
This position will be part of a dynamic team serving the Wadsworth Center’s mission as part of the New York State Department of Health’s efforts to protect and promote the health of New York’s citizens. Come be a part of Science in the Pursuit of Health®!
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a related field and three years of research experience; or a Master’s degree in a related field and two years of research experience; or a Doctorate in a related field.
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in a biological/biomedical science and at least three years of experience performing molecular methods, including at least one year handling infectious agents; or master’s degree in a biological/biomedical science and at least two years of experience performing molecular methods, including at least one year handling infectious agents; OR PhD in related field including experience with molecular methods and infectious agents. Experience performing and validating real-time or digital PCR assays. Experience supervising a laboratory including staff supervisory and laboratory management experience. Experience working with collaborators. Demonstrated experience using Microsoft Office software, including database management.
Conditions of Employment
Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.
Travel, up to 10% of the time, will be required.
The selected candidate must reside within a reasonable commuting distance of the official work location specified in the job posting and must also be located in or willing to relocate to one of the following states: New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Vermont, or Massachusetts, prior to hire. Telecommuting may be available on a very limited basis.
Exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position. Therefore, the incumbent in this position may be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment. This may include but is not limited to gloves, a lab coat, booties, and/or goggles.
