Overview

The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), one of the largest institutes of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and part of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), conducts and supports a global program of research to better understand, treat, and ultimately prevent infectious, immunologic, and allergic diseases.

The Office of Research Training and Special Programs (ORTSP) within the Division of Extramural Activities, NIAID, seeks applications from highly talented and motivated individuals to serve as a supervisory research training officer (RTO). The NIAID RTO position will provide leadership for the institute’s extramural training and career development programs across NIAID.

ORTSP serves as the primary organization that provides leadership and expert guidance in research training, small business, and biomedical research workforce diversity programs supported by the institute. ORTSP develops NIAID-wide oversight of research training, career development, and small business research programs; provides outreach and training opportunities for trainees, early-stage investigators, and small business communities; develops policies and conducts program evaluations; conducts foreign post-award training workshops; oversees a small portfolio of grants to train research administrators at foreign institutions receiving NIAID grants; and develops funding opportunities to support women and individuals from backgrounds underrepresented in the biomedical workforce. ORTSP offers unparalleled opportunities to work on exciting and challenging research initiatives in a team-oriented, fast-paced environment.

The NIAID RTO position oversees and coordinates programs of national scope, including extramural fellowships, institutional training grants, career development awards, research education awards, and loan repayment awards, and directs the work of subordinate staff. The NIAID RTO plans, develops, implements, and evaluates policies and procedures relevant to these programs and provides leadership in the development and implementation of program activities, initiatives, and strategic planning, including the recommendation of new initiatives as well as modifications of ongoing activities to the ORTSP Director, program officers, and senior NIAID officials.

Responsibilities of the position include the following:

  • Provide information and general guidance to research training applicants
  • Provide advice and guidance for the NIAID diversity supplement program (supplements include the Research Supplements to Enhance Diversity, the Research Supplements to Promote Reentry into Biomedical and Behavioral Research Careers, and the NIAID Primary Caregiver Technical Assistance Supplements) to support talented, well-prepared, and diverse investigators to conduct research in the areas of allergic, immunologic, and infectious diseases
