Health Sciences Research Data Analyst

Seattle Epidemiologic Research and Information Center (ERIC)

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) Cooperative Studies Program (CSP) is a nationally renowned program of epidemiology and clinical trial research centers that produce innovative solutions to Veteran and national healthcare problems through high quality multi-site research studies.

 

The VA CSP Seattle Epidemiologic Research and Information Center (ERIC) is hiring a full-time Research Data Analyst to work with an experienced and growing group of researchers committed to high-quality epidemiology research. The ERIC is part of the VA Puget Sound Health Care System and uses large, complex health data to understand and improve the health of Veterans.

 

Research Data Analysts will support large, national epidemiology research studies as well as smaller-scale, investigator-initiated projects. These positions will work with the Center’s senior data manager, biostatisticians, and scientific personnel on studies assessing environmental and occupational exposures, pharmacotherapy, specific medical conditions, and genetics/genomics. Some of the current research projects at the ERIC examine pulmonary health after military service, cardiovascular disease, mental health, cancer, back pain, amputations, and COVID-19 associated outcomes.

 

Key Duties:

Collaborate with investigators and staff to identify key data elements from national and local VA, DoD and other data sources
Consult with investigators about available VA data resources
Create analytic files for staff epidemiologists and biostatisticians
Create data specifications, design complex data extract systems, and write supporting documentation
Design, create, and load relational databases, tables, and files to meet the needs of study staff and support ongoing national projects
Design and create systems to collect and store study collected data
Manage, administer, and ensure data quality, security, and maintenance of data files and database systems from current and past studies
Respond quickly and accurately to urgent data requests from investigators
Provide optimal customer service to stakeholders (investigators, project managers, coworkers, and other staff) through understanding, clear communication, problem-solving and collaboration
Additional responsibilities may include curating large genomic datasets, creating and curating research repository databases, mentoring staff, training study staff on study data systems, validating study data from field sites and troubleshooting any issues, and learning new technologies and techniques needed to support CSP’s future scientific and data needs.

 

Required Qualifications:

·       Education Requirements:

o   BA/BS in a scientific- or health-related field and 4-5 years of work involving Human Subjects OR

o   Master’s or higher degree in a scientific- or health-related field and 1-3 years of experience preferred

·       Knowledge of relational databases, including primary/foreign keys, normalization, etc.

·       Experience with a programming language such as SQL, R, Python, SAS, Stata, or a related language

·       Excellent data management, programming, organization, and communication skills

·       Flexibility, adaptability, and the ability to work both independently and in a team setting

 

Desired Qualifications:

·       1+ years of experience with Human Subjects research as data manager, data administrator or data analyst

·       Familiarity with data security practices, HIPAA, and human subjects research

·       Experience with large relational databases & data structures

·       Experience with research data collection tools (REDCap, Qualtrics, etc.)

·       Experience with administrative healthcare data and healthcare coding systems

·       Knowledge of epidemiology & common epidemiologic methods

·       Familiarity with VA data systems

·       Experience with Power BI, SQL Server Management Studio, SQL Server Integration Services, Visual Basic Studio, VBA, MS Access, Cloud computing/Azure, Databricks, GenomeStudio
