This position supports the CDPH’s mission and strategic plan by leading or co-leading equity and strategic alignment activities in the Nutrition and Physical Activity Branch (NPAB), whose vision is well-nourished, physically active Californians living in healthy communities.

The Public Health Nutrition Consultant III (Spec) (PHNC III) provides nutrition and health education expertise and advanced professional, public health, and administrative guidance related to the assessment, planning, development, implementation and evaluation of major statewide programs, initiatives, and policy development that support community-based nutrition and public health approaches to improve nutrition security and health of Californians. The PHNC III provide professional and administrative guidance  on the development of statewide strategies and programmatic policies for the planning and implementation of interventions focusing on nutrition and healthy eating across settings; assists leadership with planning and implementation of obesity prevention strategies and other nutrition and physical activity-related activities; serves as a subject matter expert in nutrition science and developing evidence-based nutrition standards; and works in collaboration with cross-sectional teams within the NPAB and across state government to drive state-level nutrition education and obesity prevention interventions and evaluation of program impacts in accordance with state and federal funding requirements.  Travel in state is required up to 10% of the time.

In July 2025, the State of California implemented the Personal Leave Program (PLP) 2025. This program temporarily reduces employees’ monthly base pay in exchange for paid leave credits. This position is subject to PLP 2025 and will have a monthly base pay reduction of 3% in exchange for 5 hours of leave credits through June 2027. The salary ranges shown on this job posting do not reflect the salary reduction.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate’s relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Knowledge of and experience with policy, systems and environmental change strategies as it relates to public health interventions.
Knowledge of and experience with planning, conducting, evaluating public health interventions, specifically obesity prevention, nutrition- and/or healthy eating related interventions.
Experience providing training and technical assistance on planning, conducting and evaluating public health interventions, specifically obesity prevention, nutrition- and/or healthy eating-related interventions.
Experience with technical writing, policy briefs, and/or nutritional analysis for policy purposes
Detail oriented, organized, ability to multi-task.
Excellent writing, listening, presentation, facilitation, and time management skills.
Ability to work independently and in teams.
