The incumbent works under the general supervision of the Research Scientist Supervisor I (Epidemiology/Biostatistics), Chief of the Newborn Outcomes and Evaluation Unit. The Research Scientist (RS) II (Epidemiology/Biostatistics) manages and oversees newborn screening data collection for genetic diseases, with focus on but not limited to severe combined immunodeficiency disorder, X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy, endocrine disorders, and NBS disorders that are detectable through MS/MS testing. Disease assignment and focus is based on emerging priorities in the Unit and can change.  The incumbent plans, organizes and carries out research and data linkage projects to evaluate and improve the screening and follow-up performances for various type of disorders. The RS II will generate newborn screening epidemiological results and provide periodical reports to statewide newborn screening stakeholders.

In addition to evaluating each candidate’s relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Experience in data collection, data quality control, data processing, and/or data management with large relational datasets or classes and training in these areas.
Ability to utilize specialized software such as SQL, SAS, R, Power BI, ArcGIS, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint, and Microsoft Word.
Experience in writing reports and various types of documentation.
Knowledge of surveillance data collection or program evaluation.
Equity-minded, with a sound understanding of the socioeconomic factors that contribute to health disparities and inequities.
Detail-oriented with strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Effective verbal and written communication skills.
Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.
Self-motivated with a proven ability to work independently and enjoy working as part of a team.
