This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by protecting the health of vulnerable residents and communities from harmful environmental exposures due to climate change related impacts.

New to State candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or alternate range, as applicable.

Candidates in one of these classifications, where a Master’s Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 2% of their monthly base pay. Those where a Doctoral Degree is a required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 3% of their monthly base pay. Individuals with both a Master’s and Doctoral Degree will be given the best benefit in relation to salary shall only be eligible for only one amount.
This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s mission and strategic plan by promoting equitable environmental, social, and economic conditions and protecting the health of Californians from climate-related exposures to achieve optimal physical and mental health and well-being for all. The Research Scientist III (epi/bio) serves as a subject matter expert and conducts public health investigations of non-infectious agent exposures to identify, respond, and prevent toxicological outbreaks.
The candidates works under the general direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist Supervisor, Manager of the Investigations Unit within the Environmental Health Investigations Branch. The incumbent serves as the Toxicological Outbreak Program’s lead epidemiologist and liaison with interdepartmental, state, federal, and academic colleagues. The incumbent develops case definitions, investigation surveys, develops protocols, and provides expertise in identifying non-infectious agent exposures.

Experience working active exposure and outbreak case investigations.
Knowledge of epidemiological principles, techniques, and analysis.
Experience in database design, query, and management skills.
Experience engaging with the public and speaking with medical professionals.
