The Microbial Diseases Laboratory (MDL) of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) provides state-of-the-art diagnostic and reference laboratory services, applied research, training, and subject matter expertise for a wide range of bacterial, mycobacterial, fungal, and parasitic infectious diseases.

This position oversees the Foodborne and Waterborne Disease Section Detection Unit. The Detection Unit performs isolation and characterization of enteric bacterial pathogens for diagnostic reporting and outbreak surveillance. The incumbent is responsible for developing and writing standard operating procedures for laboratory testing, quality control, and quality assurance. They will also oversee development and validation of new testing workflows.

Desirable Qualifications

In addition to evaluating each candidate’s relative ability, as demonstrated by quality and breadth of experience, the following factors will provide the basis for competitively evaluating each candidate:

Experience working in a BSL2 laboratory.
Experience working with enteric bacteria such as, Salmonella, Shigella, and Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli.
Experience in method validation, quality control, and quality assurance in a regulatory or clinical testing environment.
Experience using software to manage samples and report results.
