Job Description and Duties
The candidate works under the direction of the Research Scientist Supervisor I (Epi/Bio), Chief of the Data Analysis and Matching Unit in the Surveillance Section. The Research Scientist III (RS III) serves as lead in the development and dissemination of the California HIV/AIDS Epidemiological Profile (Epi Profile), coordinates and provides strategic direction and support to a team of analysts, research scientists, and data management staff to prepare the Epi Profile, statewide and county HIV Care Continuums, and National HIV/AIDS Strategy (NHAS) fact sheets using complex Statistical Analysis System (SAS) queries, data steps, and procedures, adapting a format provided by the CDC and the US Council for State and Territorial Epidemiologists (CSTE), and serving as the primary writer/author of these documents. Through independent, in-depth evaluation and research projects to better understand HIV/AIDS epidemiology in California the RS III ensures that the Epi Profile is tailored to the specific needs of California HIV/AIDS program and policy planners and is published in full volume at least every five years, but with annual updates. The Epi Profile presents an overview of factors related to the California HIV/AIDS epidemic to inform HIV testing, prevention and care programs, and policies throughout California. It is designed to inform the efforts of policymakers, program planners, and other stakeholders involved with the response to the California HIV/AIDS epidemic. The RS III also develops research and evaluation projects based on findings from the epidemiological profile, and initiates and completes these projects. In addition, the RS III matches, imports, validates, and analyzes molecular HIV sequences, develops and prepares Data to Care line lists, and supports preparation of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Health Resources Services Agency (HRSA) grant applications and reports using epidemiological and grant-writing skills.
