Overview

The CDPH Injury and Violence Prevention Branch (IVPB) is responsible for developing and implementing policies, programs, and surveillance/evaluation to prevent deaths and disability from injury; IVPB promotes a public health approach to addressing injury prevention. Using data from CDPH Vital Statistics death files, as well as data on emergency department visits and hospitalizations, IVPB is a source of public health surveillance data on unintentional non-fatal injuries and injury-related fatalities, including drownings, falls, traumatic brain injury, and motor vehicle crashes.

New to State candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or alternate range, as applicable.

Candidates in one of these classifications, where a Master’s Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 2% of their monthly base pay. Those where a Doctoral Degree is a required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 3% of their monthly base pay. Individuals with both a Master’s and Doctoral Degree will be given the best benefit in relation to salary shall only be eligible for only one amount.

This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by protecting the public’s health, promoting health and wellness, and optimizing data and technology.

The candidate works under the general direction of the Chief of the Epidemiology, Surveillance, and Evaluation Section (RSS II), the Research Scientist Supervisor (RSS I) functions as the Chief of the Unintentional Injury Prevention Data Unit and provides daily supervision to civil service employees, including Research Scientists at the I, II, and III levels. The RSS I is responsible for recruiting, training, and supervising the work of state civil service research scientist staff. The RSS I provides scientific oversight and ensures scientific integrity of surveillance and research conducted by IVPB. The RSS I makes independent and complex decisions related to the design, implementation, analyses, and conclusions drawn from scientific studies to ensure accuracy. The RSS I represents IVPB with state and national public health, university, and research personnel regarding scientific studies; coordinates scientific studies with other federal and academic institutions to provide input and address the needs of CDPH. This position includes traveling within the State of California as well as to other states in the country (5%) to participate in meetings, trainings and conferences, including possible overnight stays.
