Overview
The California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) Injury and Violence Prevention Branch (IVPB) works to ensure all Californians have safe places in which to live, work, play, and participate in all activities of daily life free of violence or injury. A key focus area of the IVPB, Epidemiology, Surveillance, and Evaluation Section (ESES) is epidemiological investigations, surveillance, and evaluation within the context of injury and violence prevention.

New to State candidates will be hired at the minimum salary of the classification or alternate range, as applicable.

Candidates in one of these classifications, where a Master’s Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 2% of their monthly base pay. Those where a Doctoral Degree is a required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 3% of their monthly base pay. Individuals with both a Master’s and Doctoral Degree will be given the best benefit in relation to salary shall only be eligible for only one amounT
The candidate works under the broad administrative direction of the Health Program Manager (HPM) III, Chief, Injury and Violence Prevention Branch. The Research Scientist Supervisor II (RSS II) (Social/Behavioral) functions as the Chief of the Epidemiology, Surveillance and Evaluation Section (ESES) and provides daily supervision to the Chief(s) of the Violent Injury Prevention Data Unit and the Unintentional Injury Prevention Data Unit. The RSS II oversees the work of civil service employees, including Research Scientists at the I, II and III levels. The RSS II is responsible for the overall scientific and knowledge management of IVPB, participates in the development of public health policy, and serves as a spokesperson regarding scientific issues related to injury and violence prevention. The RSS II provides consultation in relevant meetings with local, state, and federal agencies and community organizations, and requires a high level of independence that includes travelling (10%) within the State of California as well as to other states to participate in meetings, trainings, and conferences, including occasional overnight stays.

Strong written and verbal communication abilities, including experience presenting to stakeholders, leadership, and/or the public.
Ability to translate complex scientific information into actionable insights.
Experience working with governmental agencies, community partners, or academic institutions.
Proven ability to foster collaborative relationships across departments or sectors.
Demonstrated commitment to advancing health equity or addressing disparities.
Interest in innovative methodologies and data-driven decision-making.
