Description
The Department of Public Health is hiring a twelve-month, non-tenure-track Lecturer (50% teaching, 50% service) to teach and coordinate internships in the undergraduate public health program in person and serve as a workforce development liaison with the Tennessee Department of Health. The successful candidate in this new position is expected to demonstrate excellence in teaching (including internship coordination) and service (particularly workforce development). The position begins April 1, 2024. This is a one-year appointment, jointly funded by the Tennessee Department of Health and the University of Tennessee. Option to renew based on performance with annual reviews each year. The department is home to 16 faculty members and 3 staff members. The department offers CEPH-accredited programs, including one undergraduate major (BSPH) with a concentration in Population Health Sciences (~80 majors), an undergraduate public health minor (~300 minors), two Accelerated programs, a Master of Public Health (MPH) program (Distance Education and Campus-based format) with five MPH concentrations, and a PhD program in Health Sciences.
Responsibilities:
Teaching responsibilities (50% effort) – The successful applicant will teach two courses each fall, spring, and summer.
· One course will be PUBH 489 Practice Experience, the required public health internship course. Assist students with internship site selection aligned with their career and academic interests, facilitate MOUs and other internship paperwork, oversee intern reporting, support preceptors and students, lead class sessions to foster intern reflection, learning, and professional oral communication. Evaluate and report on student learning outcomes for accreditation (CEPH, SACSCOC) plus VolCore Applied Oral Communications.
· The second course will be PUBH 202 Introductory Epidemiology. Introductory Epidemiology is required for all public health majors and minors. The course is offered in-person during fall and spring, and online during summer. Supervise Graduate Teaching Assistant(s) who are assigned to support the course.
Service responsibilities (50% effort) focus primarily on public health workforce development with the Tennessee Department of Health (TDH), and other relevant employers, to enhance the current and future public health workforce. The faculty member will serve as connective tissue between academic public health and public health practice. Identify, facilitate, and evaluate mutually beneficial activities such as practice-focused teaching, workforce development, and practice-based research. Establish or expand internships, fellowships, apprenticeships, and related programs for entry-level staff and mid-level staff at local and regional health departments as well as other appropriate community based or health-related organizations. Serve on committees, including the Undergraduate Public Health (UG PH) committee and the Academic Health Department committee. Assist the department with student recruiting, advising, career development events, alumni and employer outreach, and other duties as assigned.

Department:
The Department of Public Health is one of eight departments within the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences (CEHHS). Our MPH has over 50 years of CEPH accreditation, and our newer BSPH and PhD programs are also CEPH-accredited. Ours is a growing department, providing public health training and education at the undergraduate, MPH, and PhD levels. We have a history of strong and positive relationships with local public health organizations, especially the Knox County Health Department (KCHD) and Tennessee Department of Health (TDH) through our Academic Health Department partnerships.
