Postdoctoral Associate – Biomedical Sciences

Overview

The Department of Biomedical Sciences, School of Public Health, University at Albany is seeking applicants for a PRODiG+ Postdoctoral Fellowship to support our diverse population of research professionals. The School of Public Health is a unique partnership between the University at Albany and the New York State Department of Health; many faculty in the Department of Biomedical Sciences have appointments at the Wadsworth Center, the New York State Public Health Laboratory. The Wadsworth Center houses public health diagnostics/surveillance laboratories as well as basic science research laboratories. The Visiting Assistant Professor/Postdoctoral Associate’s area of specialization should fall into the strengths of the department: bacterial pathogenesis, vector-borne disease, clinical diagnostics, or cancer biology. Applicants who apply Artificial Intelligence (AI) to their research are strongly encouraged to apply; the University at Albany is promoting AI-based research through its “AI Plus” initiative. The Fellowship is for two years.

Primary Responsibilities:
Research
The Visiting Assistant Professor/Postdoctoral Associate will perform experimental or bioinformatic research under the supervision of a current faculty member in the department, with the goal of developing an independent research program. The Visiting Assistant Professor/Postdoctoral Associate is expected to work as part of a collaborative research team. Positions are available in the labs of faculty based at the University at Albany or at the Wadsworth Center. The Visiting Assistant Professor/Postdoctoral Associate is expected to publish high-impact papers in peer-reviewed journals and to present their work at national/international conferences.

Teaching
While teaching is not a requirement of the position, the postdoctoral Visiting Assistant Professor/Postdoctoral Associate will have opportunities to teach graduate-level courses to MPH, MS and PhD students in the Biomedical Sciences Department, on topics relevant to their research interests. The Visiting Assistant Professor/Postdoctoral Associate will be mentored by experienced faculty and will have access to campus resources for skill development.

The Fellowship is part of the SUNY-wide PRODiG+ initiative which aims to: 1) increase the system’s number and share of excellent diverse faculty committed to advancing the ideals of diversity, equity, and inclusion and 2) strengthen the retention and support for these faculty. Through the PRODiG+ program, SUNY expects to generate a pipeline of over 400 postdoctoral fellows to enter tenure-track faculty positions over the next 10 years. Eligible candidates should demonstrate personal, academic, and/or work experience engaging with diversity, equity, and inclusion and/or a commitment to facilitating and enhancing diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in the campus community.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

Be eligible to work in the United States without a visa sponsorship.
PhD in a relevant field (Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, and related subjects) from an accredited institution completed prior to start date.
Strong track-record of research as demonstrated by high-impact publications in peer-reviewed journals.
Experience with diverse student populations.
Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preference will be given to candidates who are:

Current SUNY students, alumni, and/or Fellows.
From a low-income background (e.g., Pell-eligible as undergraduates), were first- generation college students (students whose parents have not earned a bachelor’s degree), have overcome adversity, are AmeriCorps alumni, or are veterans.
