The School of Public and Population Health (SPPH) at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB Health) is recruiting candidates for a tenure track faculty position to join the Department of Population Health and Health Disparities. This individual will play an active role in teaching and mentoring of graduate and medical students, as well as conducting and publishing research. Applicants must have a doctoral degree (PhD, DrPH) in population health or related field with demonstrated ability to secure research funding.

The University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) seeks an individual with a stable record of research funding and scholarship to serve as our newest faculty member in the Department of Population Health & Health Disparities (PHHD) within the new School of Public and Population Health, which was established in 2022.
PHHD is a multidisciplinary department comprised of 13 faculty members, with highly active research portfolios in the areas of addressing non-medical drivers of health, real-world engagement and study of the life course through varied contexts. The core of identity for the PHHD department is improving the health of populations. We seek a faculty member who will build upon our collective strengths to grow our presence in the public and population health landscape to enhance our impact locally, regionally, nationally and internationally.

• Applicants must be at the level of assistant, associate or full professor and have a PhD, DrPH or equivalent degree, sufficient years of related experience, a track record of funded research as PI and/or Co-I, demonstrated familiarity with their specialty field, illustrative experience working with and/or building collaborative teams and a comprehensive understanding of a multidisciplinary academic health sciences environment.

• The ideal candidate will be energized by the faculty in the department, who are established and emerging scholars; multidisciplinary in the fields of population health and health disparities; and active in multiple national and international organizations, with research funded by the NIH and other sources. The externally funded portfolio by faculty in the department includes the large, longitudinal cohort of the Hispanic Established Population for the Epidemiological Study of the Elderly (H-EPESE); two research infrastructure P30 grants: the Texas Resource Center for Minority Aging Research (RCMAR) and the Pepper Older Americans Independence Center (OAIC); an R34 award; two training grants; career development (K) awards; and investigator-initiated (R) research awards, among others.
The School of Public and Population Health (SPPH) was approved by the University of Texas Board of Regents in 2021 and was established in 2022, with a mission of leading innovative public health education, translational research and evidence-informed practice and policy through authentic collaborations in the Gulf Coast region, Texas and the world. The school currently has four academic departments (Bioethics & Health Humanities, Biostatistics & Data Sciences, Epidemiology, Population Health & Health Disparities). Most faculty in the new SPPH have long-standing relationships and active collaborations with other schools and with research centers on campus. In 2022, the SPPH had an externally supported research portfolio of $12 million. The school offers five masters-level programs including a Master’s in Public Health (MPH) and an MD-MPH program.
