Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) invites applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor with expertise in implementation science and its application to improve healthcare delivery and health outcomes. The selected candidate will join a large and growing group of researchers in VUMC’s Center for Health Services Research, who lead investigator-initiated research and collaborate with academic and operational programs across the medical center in a learning health system.

The successful candidate will have demonstrated methodologic expertise and a track record of funding, either as a principal investigator or as a methodology co-investigator. Both tenure track and non-tenure track candidates will be considered. The faculty appointment will be in the academic department most aligned with the candidate’s background and interests and may include in the Department of Health Policy, Department of Medicine, Department of Biomedical Informatics, or other. This position is based in Nashville, TN. Remote work may be considered for this position, but on-site is strongly preferred.

The Vanderbilt Center for Health Services Research is a large interdisciplinary research Center that supports many research and training programs to improve quality, safety, value, and equity in health care delivery and health outcomes. The Center is housed within the Vanderbilt Institute for Medicine and Public Health, which provides academic, research, and infrastructure support for a wide array of efforts aimed at improving individual and population health nationally and internationally. More than 250 affiliated faculty across departments in the Schools of Medicine, Nursing, and Arts and Sciences are engaged in a robust array of funded research, making it one of the top funded programs of public health in the nation. The Institute also provides support for multiple junior faculty and postdoctoral training programs and masters and doctoral programs.

Required qualifications:

  • Doctoral degree in Health Services Research, Social Sciences, or related fields, including but not limited to public health, health policy, biomedical informatics, organizational science, epidemiology, psychology, anthropology, or sociology.
  • Current appointment as an Assistant or Associate Professor.
  • Demonstrated research productivity in implementation science in the healthcare setting, including a strong publication record and participation in externally funded research.
  • Demonstrated expertise in implementation science methods (e.g., frameworks/theories, strategies, outcomes) and study designs (e.g., qualitative, mixed-methods, hybrid, pragmatic, quasi-experimental), with application to clinical settings and healthcare delivery.
  • Ability to engage in collaborative research to develop and support implementation science components of research projects across the institution with varied scientific and clinical focus.
  • Willingness to mentor postdoctoral and junior faculty in implementation science methods by serving as a research mentor and on scholarship oversight committees and attending weekly seminars.

Desired qualifications:

  • Previous experience conducting embedded research with clinical and operational programs in a learning health system model.
  • Expertise in design, implementation, and evaluation of technologies used in support of learning health systems.
  • Advanced training in implementation science, such as a masters or certificate programs, post-doctoral training programs (e.g., implementation research institutes), or completion of career development award (e.g., K12 in learning health systems or implementation research).
  • Experience in grant writing on topics related to implementation science or learning health systems.
  • Existing independent research program supported by external funding in a Principal Investigator role.
  • Previous experience mentoring postdoctoral fellows or junior faculty.
