Join our Workplace Safety team, as an Employee Health and Safety Specialist (SO2) and work to develop, implement, and administer our Employee Health and Safety Program.

 

The Employee Health and Safety Program Manager oversees a broad spectrum of tasks geared toward safeguarding personnel within the agency. They conduct in-depth research, update hazard assessment programs, and provide consultative guidance to leadership and various divisions within DOH. Their role encompasses performing job hazard analyses, responding to accident reports, and delivering training sessions to staff. Additionally, they play an essential role in developing and implementing agency-wide directives related to respiratory protection, bloodborne pathogens, and accident prevention. Through effective communication they foster cooperative relationships, the manager ensures the dissemination of vital information, and fosters a culture of safety throughout the organization.

 

This full-time permanent Safety Officer 2 (SO2) has a duty station in Tumwater, WA. A combination of in-office and telework is currently expected. It is anticipated that the incumbent would be expected at the duty station for work activities 3-4 days weekly.

Required Qualifications

Experience defined below may have been gained through paid or unpaid activities. Please ensure any relevant experience defined below is outlined in your cover letter, resume, and/or applicant profile.

 

Option 1: Associate degree (or higher) in Industrial Hygiene, Occupational Health and Safety, or a related field AND Two (2) or more years of experience in any of the following:

Working in an occupational safety and health program,
Working with accident prevention, workplace safety program support or similar program,
Conducting accident investigations and root cause analysis,
Working in a hazard assessment and/or mitigation program.
Option 2: Four (4) or more years of experience developing/creating program components in occupational health and safety. AND Demonstrated experience in any of the following:

Working in an occupational safety and health program,
Working with accident prevention, workplace safety program support or similar program,
Conducting accident investigations and root cause analysis,
Working in a hazard assessment and/or mitigation program.
Desired Qualifications

A bachelor’s degree or higher. CSP, CIH, or similar certification.
Experience working in an incident response environment or incident management support environment.

Conditions of Employment/Working Conditions

 

With or without accommodation, I am willing and able to:

Work a full-time 40-hour work week and occasionally adjust work schedules to meet business needs, which may include evenings and weekends. A flexible work schedule will be considered upon request with supervisor approval.
Occasionally travel alone or with another person throughout the region/state/nation, which may include overnight.
Legally operate a state- or privately-owned vehicle or provide alternative transportation while on state business.
Participate in emergency response exercises and emergency events/high-priority assignments as assigned.
This is a designated response position that requires the incumbent to be responsible for the coordination of effort or resolution of a precipitating event that occurs outside of normal business hours or impacts DOH employees or operations. To do so, the employee is required to reside within 60 minutes of driving distance of the Tumwater campus in case on-site support is required.

 

Because the Office of Facilities has the primary responsibility to manage inward-facing emergencies, during an emergency/disaster, this SO2 could be expected to work 12+ hour shifts, including overnight shifts. In an extended major emergency, including possible deployment as part of the agency Incident Management Team, shift work can go on for a long period with a few days off.
