Job Description and Duties
This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by providing communications and outreach support to the newly formed Climate Change and Health Unit (CCHU), within the Exposure Investigation Section, Environmental Health Investigations Branch. CCHU is comprised of Research Scientists who conduct health investigations, surveillance, and epidemiologic investigations of climate change-associated health outcomes. CCHU aims to ensure its scientific work reflects communities’ priorities and is actionable and recognizes the value in partnering with staff with communication-related skills.

The Health Program Specialist II (HPS II) supports CCHU activities by conducting communication, health education, stakeholder engagement and outreach activities to multiple audiences and stakeholders. The incumbent exercises substantial initiative and works collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams within CDPH and externally with other scientists and agencies.  This position contributes to health equity by specifically planning for the social, economic, and health vulnerabilities of residents most at risk from climate- related impacts such as wildfire smoke and drought.

The incumbent works under the direction of the Research Scientist Supervisor I (Epi/Bio), Chief, Climate Change and Health Unit, providing expertise and guidance in advising CCHU in work with multiple public health and environmental agencies, tribal partners, non-governmental and community stakeholders.

The attached duty statement indicates whether this position is eligible for telework. All employees who telework are required to be California residents in accordance with Government Code 14200, and may be required to report to a CDPH office, when needed. Candidates who reside outside of the state of California may be interviewed; however, the selected candidate must have a primary residency in the state of California prior to appointment (and continue to maintain California residency) as a condition of employment.
