Job Description and Duties
Incumbents in one of these classifications, where a Master’s Degree is required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 2% of their monthly base pay. Those where a Doctoral Degree is a required to meet the minimum qualifications, shall receive an educational pay differential equivalent to 3% of their monthly base pay. Individuals with both a Master’s and Doctoral Degree will be given the best benefit in relation to salary shall only be eligible for only one amount.

This position supports the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) mission and strategic plan by maintaining a proactive culture of continuous quality improvement (QI), engaging staff at all levels, and leveraging data and technology to enhance services.

The Research Scientist (RS) III (Epidemiology/Biostatistics) leads the design and implementation of a comprehensive data visualization system, comprised of public-facing MCAH-program-based data dashboards (in Tableau) and restricted access dashboards (in Tableau and/or Power BI), which highlight key indicators of MCAH programmatic performance, including indicators germane to emergency preparedness and response. The RS III ensures that the data dashboards are responsive to the ongoing data needs of state and local program staff as well as the greater MCAH community. The RS III is expected to have extensive experience using both SAS software (to carry out difficult data management and sophisticated statistical analysis) and Tableau and Power BI software (to create and post complex data visualizations). The RS III works as a lead in a team environment and is expected to demonstrate leadership, project management, and teamwork skills.

Up to 5% statewide travel included for local agency visits.

The incumbent works under the general direction of the Research Scientist Supervisor II, Chief of the Adolescent and Perinatal Program Evaluation Section.

Candidates who reside outside of the state of California may be interviewed; however, the selected candidate must have a primary residency in the state of California prior to appointment (and continue to maintain California residency) as a condition of employment.
