Responsibilities
The Research Scientist I will join a team of public health professionals conducting environmental health surveillance and research. Specific duties will include: contributing to the development and implementation of environmental health indicators within New York for use in environmental health surveillance; working with a variety of health outcome, environmental hazard, climate, socio-demographic, community and built environment databases to help develop indicators and linkages between these data; identifying areas of interest for studies; working with senior staff to develop methodologies; analyzing associations between environmental and public health measures; and reporting on the findings. The incumbent will work closely with other programs within the New York State Department of Health, as well as other state and federal agencies, local health departments, community organizations and academic partners, conducting epidemiologic surveillance and research and assisting with preparing progress reports, as well as other reports and publications. The incumbent will represent the bureau on project-related workgroups at the local, state, and national level and may help coordinate workgroup activities. Other appropriate related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Public Health, Epidemiology, Environmental Health, Data Science or a related field and two years of research experience; OR a Master’s degree in a related field and one year of such experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Graduate degree in Public/Environmental Health, Epidemiology, Biostatistics, or related public health field. Experience in one or more of the following areas: epidemiologic research and surveillance of health outcomes and exposures to environmental risk factors; management and analysis of environmental, health, and demographic data; analysis of large data sets using SAS, R, or STATA; use of GIS in public health. Demonstrated excellent written and verbal skills and experience working on interdisciplinary teams. Intermediate experience in statistical software, preferably SAS and/or R.
Conditions of Employment
Grant funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables, is required.
This position requires that the incumbent will report to the official work location and live within commuting distance to the official work location. Telecommuting will be available.
Travel, up to 10% of the time, will be required.
