At the Washington State Board of Nursing (WABON), our mission is to safeguard public health and ensure the highest standards of nursing care. We regulate the competency and quality of healthcare professionals, including the development and oversight of education standards for nurses and nursing assistants.

 

Role Overview:

The WABON Nursing Consultant, Public Health, plays a crucial role by developing and evaluating the apprenticeship pathways for nursing assistants to advance to licensed practical nurses. This position collaborates extensively with state agencies, educational institutions, and healthcare providers to optimize and expand nursing education and career progression opportunities.

 

Key Responsibilities:

Lead the implementation and evaluation of the Rural High School Pathway pilot project, drafting recommendations for its future direction upon completion.
Engage with core workgroup members, including rural hospitals and high schools, to foster strong partnerships and ensure seamless project implementation.
Oversee communication strategies, representing nursing education statutes and coordinating educational outreach across platforms.
Develop comprehensive workplans in collaboration with partners, aiming to integrate and enhance nursing assistant training into broader career paths in healthcare.
Provide expert consultation on the scope of practice, training standards, and legal considerations for nursing and nursing assistant education.
Act as a liaison, ensuring all project activities align with established goals, statutory requirements, and partner expectations.
Manage project budgets and timelines, maintaining meticulous records and ensuring fiscal and operational accountability.

Work Location:

This position is based in Tumwater, WA, and offers a flexible/hybrid work arrangement with the option to tele-work or utilize our modern drop-in workstations, while enjoying the occasional in-person collaboration opportunities. Periodic in-person work may be needed to meet with community partners and collaboration within the board of nursing team.

Required Qualifications

Required Qualifications are the minimum requirements for eligibility for this position. The experience described below could have been gained concurrently AND through paid or unpaid activities.

Bachelor’s degree in nursing.
ANDLicensed as, or eligible to become licensed as, a Registered Nurse in the State of Washington.
ANDFive (5) years of experience as a registered nurse, in which you gained experience in the following:Writing technical or legislative reports to include program evaluation and data analysis.
Navigating virtual meeting technology.
Teaching or directing a nursing or nursing assistant education program OR experience with nursing assistant curriculum and educational programs, hospital regulation for hiring nursing assistants, and/or high school program structure.
Experience leading collaborative efforts between external and internal partners to enact changes in policy, regulations, or processes within a legislative or organizational framework. This may include facilitating meetings and assigning work for workgroups, committees, or boards; Leading work in partnership to meet contracted deliverables, implement legislative updates, or community engagement to develop or enhance a health or health education program.

Desired Qualifications

Experience described below could have been gained concurrently AND through paid or unpaid activities.

Master’s degree in nursing education.
Experience as a nursing assistant-certified and/or licensed practical nurse.
Previous oversight experience for nursing assistant training programs or for nursing assistant clinical rotations in a hospital setting.

Conditions of Employment and Working Conditions
